Class Descriptions
Ballet/Tap/Jazz Combo Class
The ballet, tap & jazz combo class will be offered to dancers who will be a minimum of 2 1/2 years of age by September 1 (dancers are divided into classes by age) through age 6. The ballet, tap & jazz combination class is a 45-minute class (through age 4), and a 60-minute class (ages 5-6) that meets once per week. The combination class will focus on simple to intermediate dance technique in ballet, tap, and jazz, as well as coordination, flexibility, creativity and imagination. Required class attire consists of a leotard, skirt/shorts and convertible tights; additionally, the purchase of ballet shoes, tap shoes, and jazz shoes are required for class (all required attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe & Apparel Requirements for detailed shoe & attire information). Students enrolled in the ballet, tap & jazz class will perform in a minimum of 1 holiday showcase piece, and the purchase of one holiday costume will be required to participate in the holiday showcase. Students enrolled in the ballet, tap & jazz class will perform in a minimum of 3 spring recital pieces and the purchase of one recital costume will be required to participate in the spring recital.
Tumble & Hip-Hop Combination
The Tumble & Hip-Hop Combination is a 45 minute class that meets once a week and is also offered to students ages 2..5-4. Tumbling & Hip-Hop classes will focus on flexibility, coordination, balance and strength and basic dance skills; skills will include rolls, bridges, cartwheels, skipping, galloping & chasse. All tumbling time will be spent on tumbling mats. Required attire includes a leotard, dance shorts, footless tights and bare feet for girls or gym shorts, a fitted top & bare feet for boys. Students enrolled in the tumble & hip-hop class will perform in a minimum of 1 holiday showcase piece, and the purchase of one holiday costume will be required to participate in the holiday showcase. Students enrolled in the tumble & hip-hop class will perform in a minimum of 2 spring recital pieces and the purchase of one recital costume will be required to participate in the spring recital.
Hip-Hop
Dancers who will be a minimum of 5 years old on September 1 are eligible to take Hip-Hop. This is a 45 minute class that will teach basic hip-hop elements. Up-beat, kid friendly music will be used during class. Class requirements include a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights and hip-hop sneakers (required attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information). Students enrolled in hip-hop class will perform in a minimum of 1 holiday showcase piece, and the purchase of one holiday costume will be required to participate in the holiday showcase. Students enrolled in hip-hop class will perform in a minimum of 2 spring recital pieces and the purchase of one recital costume will be required to participate in the spring recital.
Ballet/Lyrical Combination
The Ballet/Lyrical Combination class is offered to dancers who will be a minimum of 7 years old by September 1. The Ballet/Lyrical Class will continue to build a strong foundation for the technical elements of Ballet. Dancers will be shown & encouraged to use proper ballet technique throughout their class. Required class attire consists of a leotard, tights, dance skirt or dance shorts, and canvas half-sole shoes (all dance attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information). Students enrolled in the ballet/lyrical class will perform in a minimum of 1 holiday showcase piece, and the purchase of one holiday costume will be required to participate in the holiday showcase. Students enrolled in the ballet/lyrical class will perform in a minimum of 2 spring recital pieces and the purchase of one recital costume will be required to participate in the spring recital.
Tap/Jazz Combination
The Tap/Jazz Combination class is offered to dancers who will be a minimum of 7 years old by September 1. The Tap/Jazz Class will continue to build a strong foundation for the technical elements of both Tap & Jazz. Dancers will be shown & encouraged to use proper technique throughout their class. Required class attire consists of a leotard, tights, black dance skirt or black dance shorts, tan slip-on jazz shoes, & black split-sole tap shoes (all dance attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information). Students enrolled in the tap/jazz class will perform in a minimum of 1 holiday showcase piece, and the purchase of one holiday costume will be required to participate in the holiday showcase. Students enrolled in the tap/jazz class will perform in a minimum of 2 spring recital pieces and the purchase of one recital costume will be required to participate in the spring recital
Acro
Acro is a flexibility, strength, & coordination class that precursors floor tumbling. Acro meets once a week and is offered to students that are a minimum of age 5 by September 1. Clogging
Clogging is a unique style of dance that is influenced by both Tap & Irish Step. When clogging, the footwear is used percussively to create audible rhythms, and the tempo is generally upbeat. Fun fact: clogging is the state dance of North Carolina (and Kentucky!). Clogging meets once a week and is offered to dancers that are a minimum of age 5 by September 1. Required attire includes a Carolina Dance Company clogging t-shirt, black dance shorts or black leggings, and black clogging shoes with Buck taps (ages 5-8 will wear full-sole clogging shoes; ages 9 and up will wear split-sole clogging shoes). Students enrolled in the Clogging class will perform in a minimum of 1 holiday showcase piece, and the purchase of one holiday costume will be required to participate in the holiday showcase.
